Special Care Dentistry

Special Care Dentistry is the field of dental practice which focuses on facilitating and improving oral care for individuals with limitations, whether they be physical, sensory, intellectual, emotional and/or medical, which make the access to regular  dental care more difficult. Special Care Dentistry is also involved with the care of patients with medical conditions that affect their oral health, as well as patients requiring medical treatments or medications that may have negative effects on the oral cavity.

The oral health of an individual with special needs can have a direct impact on the overall health and well-being of that person. Poor oral health can adversely affect quality of life due to chronic infection or pain.

Our clinic offers a patient centered holistic approach as well as a comprehensive understanding of the impact that medical and disability issues can have on oral health. Dr. Michael Wiseman has  additional training in Special Care Dentistry. He is a Fellow of the Special Care Dentistry Association, as well as a Member of the Royal College of Surgeons (Edinburgh) in Special Needs Dentistry. He has been treating special needs patients for all of his professional career. Whether it be the patient suffering from dental phobia, the special needs child with autism, or the geriatric Alzheimer’s patient, Dr. Wiseman gently makes connections with his special needs patients and provides the appropriate dental care. The office and operatories are all wheelchair accessible and were specially designed with the special needs patient in mind. There is also a reserved spot for handicapped parking outside the front door.

Should you have any questions concerning Special Care Dentistry and the services that we provide, please contact the office and we will be glad to assist you.
